The Urgent Crisis Facing Our Somali Seas
As a concerned citizen witnessing daily the destruction of Somali seas, I find myself constrained to raise this urgent matter before you all. Our venerable Somali seas, which hold the honour of being home to the longest coastline in Africa, are at grave peril of becoming mere spectres of their past glory due to illegal fishing, toxic dumping, and rampant profiteering from our blue economy.
Since our government collapsed in 1991, opportunistic countries have been taking undue advantage of our precious seas causing irreversible damage. Not only is the gross illegal fishing stealing our resources, but even more disturbing is the extensive toxic waste dumping that is poisoning our waters and marine life. The scale of these activities is astounding and gravely harmful, so much so, that if it continues at this rate, there will unfortunately be little to nothing left of our rich seas and oceans.
